The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond — the much-talked-about sequel to the 2023 film The Kerala Story — has been dominating headlines not just for its release but for the legal challenges, protests and box-office performance it has generated since hitting screens in late February 2026.
Directed by Kamakhya Narayan Singh and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, the film was scheduled to premiere on February 27, 2026, but its path to release was far from smooth. A single-judge bench of the Kerala High Court initially issued an interim stay on its release, citing concerns that the certification process by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) might not have fully considered potential impacts on social harmony. That order sparked a wave of legal debate over the film’s themes and content.
The controversy deepened when public interest litigations were filed seeking not only to challenge the film’s certification but even to remove the word “Kerala” from its title, arguing that it could misrepresent or unfairly associate the state with the narrative. However, a Division Bench of the Kerala High Court overturned the stay, allowing The Kerala Story 2 to release on its scheduled date, albeit with ongoing legal scrutiny.
Ahead of release, the film had also undergone scrutiny from the CBFC, which granted it a U/A 16+ certificate with 16 significant cuts, including trimming intimate and assault scenes to address concerns about handling intense subject matter responsibly.
Once it finally reached theatres, the movie’s box-office performance has been mixed at best. Early collections showed a promising jump from its first day to the second, with the film earning around ₹5.40 crore by Day 2, indicating initial audience interest following the lifted stay. But momentum faded quickly. By Day 3, collections dipped sharply with less than ₹2 crore in nett earnings, and reports suggest that the total domestic tally by Day 4 remained modest, struggling to match even a fraction of its predecessor’s success.
Part of this downturn may be due to audience reaction and on-ground protests after release. Several screenings were reportedly cancelled in parts of Kerala and elsewhere, reflecting local backlash despite the legal green light, and signalling that controversy could be affecting attendance.
Producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah has publicly defended his creative choices amid the storm, stating that the film was intended to highlight criminal activities and societal issues rather than disparage Kerala or any community. He emphasised that the narrative “goes beyond Kerala” to explore broader themes, rejecting claims that the title or content was offensive.
Critics and viewers have been divided as well. While some praise the film’s attempt to tackle socially relevant topics, others argue that its narrative and presentation lack nuance and sensationalise sensitive subjects, which could be contributing to uneven word-of-mouth and declining box-office traction.
The unfolding story of The Kerala Story 2 underscores how cinema can become entangled with legal, cultural and social debate — especially when it touches on topics perceived as controversial or politically charged. Even as courts allow its screening and producers defend its intent, the film’s reception suggests that navigating the delicate balance between artistic expression and public sentiment remains a significant challenge in today’s media landscape.
