Carly Rae Jepsen has revealed her new release Day and Night, a double album containing 24 tracks that showcase two sides to her pop songwriting. Released 18 September through Interscope Records, the album continues her work of focusing on the pop genre, as well as exploring other sounds such as organic pop, psychedelic music, synth, and dance.
There are 12 songs on each side of the album; these sides are entitled Day and Night. Jepsen didn’t just want to use the two words as a visual concept; each side was instead musically themed to a different feeling. Day features live instrumentation, warmer sounds and draws influences from 1960s folk and 1970s psychedelic pop. Night is more electronic and draws influences from dance-pop.
The second half entitled the Day side begins with “After All” and then lists cd tracks as “Habits of Creatures”, “Versailles”, “On Wires”, “Blue Skies”, “Burning Heart”, “Wild Child” “Good Fine Alright”, “Something Tragic”, “Soft”, “Lonely Side of the Bed” and “Just a Little Walk on the Moon”. The Night section begins with “Never Let a Good Thing Die” and then lists the cd tracks as “Amalfi Coast”, “Patience Power Passion”, “Don’t Leave Me on the Dance Floor”, “Motivation”, “You Don’t Know How It Feels”, “Near or Far”, “Diver”, “Hold me to the light”, “That’s Just Me”, “No Labels, I Love You” and “Super Sage”.
The project officially started to take shape in the public earlier this year upon the release of the song On Wires, the album’s first single that was released in June. The song showcased the album’s more warm and organic side and served as a glimpse for fans of what was still to come.
Jepsen has told us that the album has a natural duality. In an interview on Apple Music, she refers to one half of the album as being more natural, and based around real instruments, and notes the second is darker and largely based around synthesizers, because of this the Day and Night duality.
The album also represents a large phase of personal change in Jepsen’s life. Recent interviews have linked her song writing to struggles with love relationships a happy home life, vulnerability and great change in her personal life. These themes are also accompanied by her desire to explore genres of music beyond that of pop.
There are 24 songs on the one large work that is Day and Night, and Jepsen is that means left an enormous amount of freedom in the emotional spectrum he can explore. The first half of the album is less electronically rooted and features warmer compositions, whereas the second half is more inclined to nightclubs with the use of synthesizers, electronic elements and beats.
The new release lands also at a stimulating time in Jepsen’s own creative career. As she is further developing her work in other fields like musical theatre, she is shifting to another level of the pop artist who has been growing further and further away from radio pop. Day and Night is That’s why another addition to this list of Jepsen expanding her pop persona.
