NASA Perseverance Rover Sets New Driving Record on Mars

NASA’s Perseverance rover has become the most distant traversing vehicle to date on another planetary body in the history of spaceflight. The six-wheeled robotic astronaut has crossed 28.10 miles (45.22 kilometres) on the surface of the Red Planet, eclipsing the previous benchmark achieved by NASA’s Opportunity rover.

The achievement came on October 11 2026 while Perseverance was exploring the western rim of Jezero Crater. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) said in a release on October 12 that Perseverance had covered the distance using improved autonomous navigation abilities and that the systems that let it move around the planet are still working well. The achievement is big for a mission that was only planned to drive for a short distance while unlocking the secrets of the planet.

Opportunity had previously been the record-holder, driving 28.06 miles (45.16 kilometres) during its mission, which began in 2004 and continued until 2018. During that time the rover far surpassed its initial mission timeframe, becoming one of NASA’s most successful missions to date.

It covered that distance in just over five and a half years from its landing on Mars in February 2021. Perseverance is a mark of how progress in robotics, terrain-navigation software and terrain-analysis technology has better the ability of spacecraft to traverse difficult planetary terrains.

The record-setting drive was about 299.6 feet (91.31 meters). That might seem short relative to the long drives the vehicles take on Earth, but driving on Mars is a major technical challenge. There’s the time delay in communicating with the rover, which means controllers can’t constantly “drive” it, and there’s terrain filled with rocks, slopes, and loose soil to contend with.

Perseverance is engineered to continue that work while gathering information and exploring terrain that may hold evidence of the planet’s former climate.

One of the key technologies that makes the feat possible is called AutoNav, in which Perseverance makes autonomous navigation decisions. This auto-nav software enables the rover to examine the environment around it, recognize obstacles and determine optimal routes between plotted waypoints.

Navigation cameras now, with what are known as navigation cameras, the vehicle maps out in 3D the terrain in the area around it, identifying various obstacles before tackling them. This can allow the rover to make autonomous driving decisions to some extent, so that human operators are not required to spend as long planning out each move.

Per NASA, in its most recent update, more than 90 percent of the total distance traveled by Perseverance has been driven using autonomous navigation. In contrast, the use of autonomous navigation by the Mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity during their driving history was only about 5 percent.

Its new navigation system is able to analyze far more data from its surroundings to determine safe routes and travel more quickly. These capabilities are critical when traversing new terrain where there is little or no human guidance.

Setting driving records is only part of Perseverance’s mission. The rover is also investigating Jezero Crater, which scientists believe was home to a lake and a river delta billions of years ago.

Since liquid water is vital to life as we know it, it was important to look for signs that the crater might have once hosted microbial organisms. The rover checks out rocks, analyzes minerals and gathers samples that may lock away a record of the planet’s past.
