Gifted Education Programmes: What You Need to Know

If you are reading this, it is probable that you have heard of or are familiar with Singapore’s gifted education programme. This programme was established to facilitate the full development of intellectually gifted students. The Ministry of Education initially implemented it in the year 1984. Subsequently, it was established as an integral component of initiatives aimed at developing an educational system that accommodates a broad range of learning abilities and skills.

Upon further analysis, it was shown that certain children with exceptional intelligence thrived under intensive intellectual stimulation, while others might achieve an average level of development. Gifted students shall be obligated to adhere to the standard curriculum and sit for the same examinations as their non-gifted peers. Nevertheless, supplementary disciplines were integrated to provide students with a more comprehensive understanding of the subject.

A structured programme founded on the principle of enrichment was incorporated within the “Gifted Project” concept document of 1983. However, there have been instances where students have struggled to cope with the demands and expectations of the programme, as well as facing criticism and discrimination from their own peers. Also criticized for fostering elitism is the gifted education programme. This is due to the fact that students in the gifted education programme interacted with one another more frequently than they did with peers outside of the program, and they found it challenging to communicate with them.

Remember that this programme has gradually expanded at both the elementary and secondary levels. Due to the implementation of the integrated programme, the gifted education programme has undergone changes at the post-secondary level.

The gifted education programme has the advantage of allowing students to advance to junior college, despite the fact that the curriculum and methodology are comparable.
