A Telugu-language drama set during the 1920s India’s struggle for independence from Britain, RRR is directed by SS Rajamouli. It is one of India’s biggest box office hits of all time. The film stars Ram Charan, Jr. NTR, Alia Bhatt, and Ajay Devgn. It has grossed more than $155 million worldwide. In addition to its domestic success, it has also earned international acclaim. And now, the movie has been nominated for the Best Original Song at the 95th Academy Awards.
For those unfamiliar with the movie, it features wild action sequences and complex dance numbers. One of the most popular dance sequences in the film is a dance number featuring Ram Charan, Jr. NTR, and Jr. NTR’s father, N.T. Rama Rao Jr. That sequence was filmed in front of the official residence of Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky.

However, the film was not submitted as India’s official entry for the Oscars. Earlier this year, the Film Federation of India chose “Last Film Show” instead. Although it didn’t advance, it made the Oscars shortlist for the International Feature category.
Meanwhile, the Golden Globes awarded “Naatu Naatu” the Best Original Song trophy. The song was composed by M.M. Keeravaani and Chandrabose. During the awards season, the song has already won the Critics’ Choice Award. Adding to its impressive list of accolades, the Oscar nomination will allow “RRR” to compete against Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and others.
The Oscars ceremony will take place in March. On the list of nominees, India scored three nominations, including two for documentaries and one for original songs. Among the films that received nominations in the Best Documentary category were All That Breathes by Shaunak Sen, and Triangle of Sadness. Indian films that were eligible for the Academy Awards include SS Rajamouli’s RRR, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi, Vivek Agnihotri’s The Kashmir Files, and the Marathi movie Tujhya Sathi Kahi Hi.
As part of the Best Picture category, “RRR” is also nominated for the Best Director award. But this is the first time that an Indian film is nominated for any other category. It has been a long and hard road for the movie to achieve this, but it finally has. Despite being a Telugu-language movie, RRR has become a hit overseas. Since its release last March, the film has sold out screenings in major cities across the United States. It has enjoyed favourable reviews and a growing fanbase.
At the end of the day, India has achieved a feat that no other nation has done. This is because no Indian feature film has ever won an Academy Award. Moreover, SS Rajamouli’s RRR is the first Indian film to receive an Oscar nomination for an original song.
The film is expected to win the Best Original Song award, but it has a tough time catching up with the other nominees in this category. The winner will be announced on March 12. If the film wins, it will be the first Indian feature film to do so.
