The Singapore Sports Hub is a major sports complex in Kallang, Singapore. It was built at the cost of S$1.33 billion and officially opened on 28 June 2014. The complex consists of a 55,000-seat National Stadium, a 20,000-seat Sports Hub Arena, an Aquatics Centre, a Water Sports Centre, and a Water Venture Aquatic Centre. The Sports Hub is the first integrated sports, entertainment, and lifestyle hub for free family activities in Singapore.
The Singapore Sports Hub was built to replace the former National Stadium at the same site. The new stadium incorporates a state-of-the-art retractable roof, which can be opened or closed in 20 minutes. The roof comprises two layers – an outer glass layer and an inner PTFE-coated fabric layer. The stadium also has a LED lighting system that can simulate natural daylight, making it suitable for day and night events.
The Singapore Sports Hub is also home to a giant chess set. The chess set is made up of oversized chess pieces that are 2.5 meters tall. The chess set is located in the Water Sports Centre, and it can be used by visitors free of charge. The Sports Hub is open daily from 6 am to 11 pm. The Sports Hub was designed by a team of international architects and engineers led by Arup Associates. The design features several sustainable initiatives, such as natural ventilation and lighting and rainwater collection for use in the complex.
